Car accidents kill more Texas teenagers than any other type of accident. Allstate Insurance has compiled a list of the Texas roads and highways where the most teenage car accidents occur.
According to their data and the Texas Department of Transportation, the following are the five most dangerous roads for teenage drivers in Texas:
- 1-45 in Harris County, with more than 3,000 crashes between 2006 and 2010
- I-10 in Harris and Bexar County
- I-35 in Bexar County
- SL1604 in Bexar County
- I-410 in Bexar County
In Dallas County, I-635 (Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway) is the most dangerous route, with 1,489 teen car accidents between 2006 and 2010. LBJ Freeway is a challenge for everyone because of frequent congestion and road construction projects. I-35 E is close behind, with 1,162 teenage car crashes during the five-year period.
Inexperienced, Distracted Drivers
Teenage drivers are inexperienced and often have trouble changing lanes quickly or responding to traffic problems. This inexperience plays a role in many teenage car accidents, especially those on busy highways such as I-45 and I-635.
Unfortunately, many teen drivers are also distracted drivers. While Texas Governor Rick Perry shot down a bill to prohibit texting while driving for all drivers, current state law bans teenage drivers from texting or otherwise using cell phones while driving. Time will tell how many teenage drivers are deterred by the law.
Distracted driving is not only limited to cell phones, however. Teenagers are notorious for getting into distracting conversations with passengers, flipping through music on their radios / cell phones / iPods, putting on makeup, and finding other ways to take their eyes off the road. Combine that with dangerous highway situations and you have a recipe for disaster.
